We are body AND soul

Although we don’t see it, a sick soul can cause a sick body.

The amount of people who ask me for prayer for physical issues that actually have a spiritual component to them is incredible.

What do I mean by this? Well, we are made of body and spirit and while we cannot see our spirit with our physical eyes, we know it is there. This why a sick body can cause a sick soul and why a sick soul can lead to a sick body. “But John” people say “how can you say that? There’s no physical evidence or proof that a soul exists!” Well, just because we can’t see feel or touch something does not mean it doesn’t exist. There are things that we know to exist that are completely immaterial. “That’s impossible!” people say.

Oh really? How about gravity? Gravity is immaterial, yet no one would deny that it has great effect on us. Interestingly, although we can measure its effect on material things, we can’t measure it apart from them. People will then say “OK, but gravity is an external force, and its effects are external – gravity affects us externally but does not infect us internally.” Fair enough. Let me give you another example of something immaterial that affects us in a material way.

Have you ever had a thought, or an idea? How about a conversation? All of these are immaterial, yet no one doubts their existence. Moreso, these non-physical thoughts, ideas and conversations can and do influence our physical bodies. To me, this is proof, not only that it is possible for an soul to exist, but of the link between body and soul. This is why non-physical things (like stress) can affect our physical bodies and physical things (like addictions) can affect our souls. When someone presents themselves as having multiple issues such as headaches, nausea, achy joints, financial problems, marital problems and a whole range of other issues, I begin to wonder if there may be a spiritual component involved. And there often is. Let me give an example.

The breaking of the covenant of marriage is a very deep spiritual wound and just like any other wound, if left to its own, it festers. I said “Ok, lets take that off the table (as it were) and pray through that event. Repeat after me. In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the spirit of divorce. In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the spirts of shame and guilt. In the name of Jesus Christ, I forgive my husband for cheating on me and breaking the marital covenant.” I then prayed to break the power of these things over her and then prayed for healing and immediately, 10 years of hearing loss was gone.

Now, I had prayed for healing for her several times before and nothing happened, yet after forgiving her husband, the very same words were now efficacious. If there is no link between body and soul, then why didn’t the prayer work before? Why was she now healed and not before? Because a sick soul can manifest itself as a sick body.

Was this a physical problem or a spiritual problem? Who knows for certain, but what it is now is a former problem.
