The following is an excerpt from my book “From Heathen to Healer” available HERE
It was a typical Michigan winter’s evening – gray and dreary in all respects. But it wasn’t just the weather that was gray and dreary that evening at the healing service – as my wife and another prayer minister were about to witness.
My wife and a friend of ours (the aforementioned prayer minister), were at the front of the church waiting for someone to come up for prayer. They didn’t have to wait very long. A rather thin man of average height came forward. He was unremarkable to look at, but, according to my wife “you didn’t need spiritual gifts or the ability to read souls to tell that there was something amiss with him”. She said that it looked like the man was carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders, and indeed he was.
Abused as a child and poorly treated during his adult life by society, the man began to pour out his story. It was tale after tale of woe, abuse and neglect. My wife said he “had the saddest looking deep brown eyes” and the “he just looked like a beaten dog”. He unloaded a lot of troubles that night before the cross of Jesus and there were lots of tears. His sorrow was profound and the weight he was carrying around was palpable. After he finished, he just sort of took a deep breath, sighed and, looking at the prayer ministers with those sad brown eyes, said “well, thanks for listening to me anyways“.
The other prayer minister told him that they were going to pray for him and that they were going to take all those cares and worries and tie them up in a prayer and offer them to God. As they prayed, the man closed his eyes and just received God’s love. The prayer was simple. Each prayer minister asked for Jesus to come into the mans bruised and broken heart and to heal it. They rebuked sadness, sorrow and any and all spirits of grief, but they had no idea what God was doing behind those eyelids.
The man described a wave of love and peace as he never felt before and just sat, soaking in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Through his closed eyelids, tears formed, They rolled down first one cheek and then the other. The man sat for the longest time, motionless except for his breathing. Finally, after five or so minutes he opened his eyes and, smiling broadly, looked at my wife who looked back at him in stunned in amazement.
“It wasn’t the smile that surprised me” my wife said, “it was that he was looking at me with two of the most beautiful deep blue eyes I’d ever seen“.
